J.O.Y. Black Women United (BWU) is a transformative 12-week mentorship program dedicated to empowering young African-American women in Baltimore City. BWU pairs participants with experienced mentors to foster personal growth, accountability, and community support. Designed to bridge generational gaps, the program provides a safe and supportive space for young women to express themselves, navigate daily challenges, and build a strong foundation for success.

JOY Black Women United (BWU) mentors are essential to the program’s mission of empowering young African-American women in Baltimore City. To ensure the program’s success, mentors must meet the following requirements:
Eligibility Criteria:
- Age Requirement: Must be at least 25 years old to provide maturity and life experience.
- Residency: Must reside in or have a strong connection to the Baltimore City area.
- Background Check: Must pass a comprehensive background check to ensure the safety and well-being of participants.
Personal and Professional Qualities:
- Commitment to the Program: Be available for the full 12-week program and actively participate in mentoring sessions and activities.
- Strong Communication Skills: Ability to listen, provide constructive feedback, and foster open dialogue.
- Role Model Behavior: Demonstrate integrity, reliability, and sound decision-making.
- Empathy and Patience: Support young African-American women with compassion and understanding.
Skills and Experience:
- Life Skills Proficiency: Guide mentees in financial literacy, workforce development, and entrepreneurship.
- Knowledge of Family Values: Promote the importance of family and community connections.
- Advocacy for Emotional Wellness: Encourage healthy emotional expression and help break the stigma around mental illness.
- Educational Support: Help mentees recognize the value of education and career opportunities.
Mentor Responsibilities:
- Attend mentor training and development sessions.
- Provide a safe and supportive space for mentees to share their challenges.
- Help participants build confidence, independence, and essential life skills.
- Engage mentees in cultural awareness discussions, inspiring them to “Know Your Past, Create Your Future.”
- Maintain consistent communication with program participants and staff.
