FOR PrEP
Learn how PrEP can help protect you from HIV — and why talking to a healthcare provider could be the most important step you take.
What is PrEP?
PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis. That means routinely taking prescription medicine before you're exposed to HIV to help reduce your chances of getting it.
The CDC recommends that ALL sexually active adults and adolescents be informed about PrEP for prevention of HIV.
Just remember, PrEP doesn't protect against other STIs, so be sure to use condoms and other healthy sex practices.
Protection Before Exposure
PrEP works by building up in your body to prevent HIV from taking hold if you're exposed.
Daily Pill or Injection
Available as a daily pill or an injection that lasts several months — talk to your provider about which is right for you.
Part of a Total Package
PrEP works best alongside regular testing, condom use, and open conversations with your partners.
You may benefit from PrEP if…
You don't always use condoms
You recently had an STI
You have partner(s) who don't know their HIV status
You have sex in an area where HIV is more common
Cost shouldn't keep you
from asking about PrEP
Find a Provider
Talk to a healthcare provider who prescribes PrEP. They'll assess your risk and discuss your options.
Get Tested
You'll need an HIV test and other lab work before starting. Regular follow-up testing is part of the process.
Coverage & Cost
Most insurance plans cover PrEP and related services like HIV testing. Financial assistance programs are available too.
