BLACK MEN UNITED (BMU)

JOY Black Men United (BMU) is a It will be a fraternal mentoring program designed to pair young African-American males with older men to create a support system that will both mentor and hold them accountable.

BMU will concentrate our program in the East and West sections of Baltimore, Maryland. These areas are predominately African-American and have seen an upswing in the breakdown in the traditional family.

In this twelve-week program, our goal is to connect the generational divide within Baltimore City by addressing the root causes of this learned behavior. BMU plans to provide a safe space where the youth in our program can vent and speak about the frustrations that they face daily. We hope to tackle these immediate needs of the inner-city youth:

  • Loving Yourself – Independent Life Skills
  • The Importance of Family – Family Values
  • Brotherhood
  • Education
  • Employment
  • Financial Literacy
  • Workforce Development
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Documentation
  • Mental Illness
  • Emotional Health – Black Boys Can Cry
  • Know Your Past, Create Your Future – Change a Generation

BMU is actively seeking young African-American males, between the ages of 16-24, who may have been affected by homeless, drug addiction, lack of education, and/or criminal backgrounds. We desire to progressively change the mind, heart, and soul of every participant in BMU. We will encourage them to go and share what they have learned, thus spreading the positivity. Ultimately, this will strengthen their communities and make Baltimore stronger.

change the people in them.”
